Estate Planning Documents….Family….Life Happens…Then What?
Coming into the New Year I have committed to organize my life as we are experiencing health issues with our parents and worry about how organized their affairs are if we need to jump in at any time.
I have become more aware of the things I do on a daily basis with passwords, investments, banking, running a couple of businesses that if I did not have a plan in place my spouse and family would be at a huge disadvantage upon my demise. They would not know where to start nor be able to carry on until they painstakingly dug their way through the mountain of notes I have accumulated on my activities and have scattered between a couple of offices, my briefcase, a couple of computers and what I carry around in my head.
Things I take for granted everyday would be a huge undertaking for those that survive me. I mentioned to my insurance agent my goal the other day as I called to get a master list of all the insurance we have with him and he said that less than 1% of people do this planning. That doing this now is a gift to my family. Getting documents and files in order now will relieve them of a huge burden of sorting things out after the fact.
I decided to commit to getting it all down on paper and in a searchable electronic file that would be available to the family at a moment’s notice.
But where to start?
