Fifteen years ago my best friend and I decided we wanted to play golf. We were in our early 40’s and had not spent any time playing as we were involved in helping raise our children and attending their life events. I came across our church’s Monday night golf league and pitched the idea. Bruce was up for it.
We played nine holes at a western suburban golf course and were matched up with another couple of guys. The next week we showed up and we played the back 9. Each week we played the front or back 9 and met other guys out for a little golf and companionship.
We stumbled onto a couple of guys that were as bad as us and we became friends. By the middle of August the league announced that it was done for the year so we could get back to our families and get ready for the upcoming school year.
To put this in perspective this was 2003 and Bruce said “hey there is this online website where we can book tee times” so we kept playing. Now we were going to a new course each week. We decided after a vigorous round of 9 holes we needed beer which turned into a burger and a beer. So a tradition was born. Monday Night Golf with the Guys.
I can still see my wife in the kitchen in late September with her hands on her hips, “when does this golf league end?” I said “it did back in August but Bruce found a website and we decided to keep playing”. Threw him right under the bus!
The next year we decided not to play in the church league but instead went on our journey of booking a different course each week. Bruce books the course. We now have a list of all the courses rated by slope and rating and our favorites. We start out with easier courses and work our way into the season.
Bob generates an overhead of the course with yardage and it is helpful when you can’t see around the corner. Dan is the foodie and finds a local burger place with beer and keeps a log of what has become the go to list each year with new additions all the time. And I show up, it’s the perfect foursome!
I have told the younger guys in my life or at the office to find your “night out”, to book some time with your guys to just enjoy.
We are starting our 15th year and still laugh at the same old jokes, recall the great shot(s) we had on this or that course even if it was years ago.
Over the years rules have been developed, none related to golf as we rarely follow golf rules. We will play upwards of 30 times throughout the summer. As soon as it is above 50 degrees until Day Light Savings changes in early November.
It has become a favorite thing to look forward to each year and each week of the summer.
My recommendation is to find your “Monday Night Golf with the Guys” and build a lifetime of friendship. Love you guys!
