This is a great article that lays out the options available to all of us regarding Social Security benefits. I read the article and found the answers for our family. My wife worked part-time for many years and we wanted to know the best strategy for her collecting social security in a couple of years.
For us the best strategy will be for her to claim as soon as she turns 62. It will be a reduced amount based on her years of part-time work. Once I retire, she will be bumped up to 50% of my higher social security amount. While the amount she collects goes up every month she waits to file, the number of months to collect until she converts to spousal benefit declines. It’s a simple math problem to calculate and for her the best solution is file as soon as possible.
Action step: It’s never too early to plan the next stage of life and get a plan together. Better to act than react.
