My father-in-law just passed away in July from kidney failure. He was sharp up until the last day before he fell into a coma and died. He had time to reflect on his family and get his affairs in order. One of the things he did was meet with his wife and two daughters and discussed finances and his obituary. He provided details on his service in the navy and special comments about his family that he wanted reflected in his obituary.
He was in hospice care at home and upon his demise the family worked with one of the local funeral homes. We learned in our first meeting that we would not be sending the obituary directly to the local newspaper. A common scam is where someone claims someone else has died and have submitted an obituary to that effect. In Wisconsin the law is that every obituary has to come from a funeral home so they are held accountable for providing a truthful statement that the paper can then reply upon. As of this writing I do not know what the law is in Minnesota but wanted to give you a heads up on this and the other scam that happened to my mother-in-law which will be in the next post.
