Steps I’m taking to get organized….part 2.
The first place to start with organizing our life and documents was to get caught up with a Final Will and Testament. We had one when the kids were first born but had not updated since then. Things have changed in the last 30 years!
Wills dispose of property owned at death, designates executors, trustees and guardians. These are all key decisions that will be made without your input in the absence of a Will.
You can go online and find resources such as http://www.totallegal.com/ where in ten minutes or less you can draft a Will that will be legally binding. You can also engage an attorney , wealth management company, financial planner, insurance broker and other advisors to help craft a Final Will and Testament that will meet your overall objectives.
Once we had our Wills drafted we invited our good friends to join us for a signing party at a local bank where the loan officers are all notaries. We signed, our friends signed as witnesses and then we had it notarized all at the same time so that they would not have to come back to court someday to attest that this was their signature. All said and done we knocked it out at the bank in a few minutes and then went back to the house for cocktails and conversation.
I have been procrastinating to get this done for years. It took me watching and listening to our parents deal with health issues to kick me in the butt to take the time to research a good solution for us and to execute the plan.
What will it take for you to get your affairs in order?
Action Step: Use this post to organize-plan-execute and get that Will done/updated. It is in the best interest of your family.
